Christmas Gadgets

If you’re a gadget nut with a cashed-up family, chances are you will have a Nintendo Wii or a Flip Mino HD digital video camera sitting under your Christmas tree on Friday morning, reports NZ PC World Magazine. flip minoAccording to New Zealand electronics retailers, the two products have been among the best sellers in the lead up to Christmas, along with the Apple iPod Touch MP3 player and hands-free car kits. JB Hi-Fi product manager Cameron Breingan said the Wii was looking likely to defend its 2008 Christmas crown as the highest grossing electronics item at JB Hi-Fi’s New Zealand outlets. “The Nintendo Wii targets the casual gamer and is a very inclusive device. It is family friendly and accessible to men, women and children alike.” Another common consumer choice was the iPod Touch 8GB model, which had proven the most popular electronics item based on units sold, he said. “The key to the iPod Touch is the ability to add games and applications via iTunes. There is something in there for everyone and it opens the device up from being a mere music and video player.” Other retailers spoken to by PC World agreed the Wii and iPod Touch were proving popular. But some said they were facing strong competition for top spot from products like the Flip Mino HD. A Dick Smith Electronics spokesperson said the Mino HD had sold particularly well and was “definitely” proving the most popular item at Dick Smith’s stores this year. “We are still cranking with Nintendo Wii sales but the HD version of the Flip Mino has been a standout. That has sold really well.” The recent law change outlawing the hands-on use of mobile phones while driving had significantly increased the popularity of hands-free car kits as gifts this Christmas, he said.
