LG Debuts 19-inch E Ink Display

I used to try to impress my dad by telling him about how the e-book reader will replace the paper-based book, and guess what was his response?. “It’s a crap!”, that’s what he uttered after I showed him an ads from a website few years back.

Well, we can’t blame those conversative thinkers. As a matter of fact, the early batch of e-book reader has some issues such as poor screen quality as well as slow response time.

But with the latest gadget from LG, I’m pretty sure those who believe that printed paper will be used as a reading materials forever, will give a second thought.

The LG 19-inch E Ink display is a thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) that looks exactly like a normal newspaper, with an exceptional – animated contents.

If you find some difficulties to imagine how it looks, get a Harry Porter or Minority Report DVD, and you could see this futuristic gadget being used as a part of the movies’ prop.

This big Metal-Foild electronic paper prototype from LG Display is really impresive with a size of 0.3 mm thin and 250 x 400 mm, about the size of a sheet of A3 paper and weight 130 grams.

It’s flexibility is the main attraction because normal e-book readers looks no different than a tablet PC. But with this innovationĀ  by LG, it is flexible enough to be bent much like a piece of paper, which gives you a newspaper reading experience, though you can’t fold it in half.

The e-ink newspaper from LG can withstand the bending force and not break by replacing the normal glass material with metal foil. It also uses the GIP or gate-in-panel technology which combines the gate drive integrated circuit (IC) onto the panel to give more flexibility.

But my primary concern here is the price when it hits the market. As usual, latest innovation gadgets’ price will cost you a bomb. Normal consumer like myself will have to wait for sometime before the price gets slashed.
