Print Wirelessly Using Your Old Printer

Today’s technologies has allow a lot of devices to be interconnected wirelessly using 802.11 standard or widely known as WiFi. Starting from computers, now cameras and printers are also can be connected to your home wireless network.

Wireless printers allow us to print without the hassle of connecting the printer cable to your computer. You may print almost from anywhere in your house as long as it is within your wireless coverage.

But if you think only latest printers can do the marvel of wireless printing, you may need to reconsider. Even your old non-wireless printer can now benefit the advancement of technology.

With investment on some gadgets, it is possible to print your documents ‘over the air’ using your old printer. You may also look for wireless printer servers that you will use in the process. Here’s how you may turn this into reality.

Configure your printer for wireless printing

You will have to acquire a wireless print servers that are compatible with both, your printer and your wireless network. Even if you printer’s manual doesn’t state it’s compatibility with a server, there’s still hope!.

Check out the compatibility through manufacturer’s website as well as a Google search. The printer server manufacturer usually will list down all compatible printers. You may check for any known compatibility issues such as able to utilize the printing function only, if you have All-in-One (AIO) printer, but not for scanning or faxing functions.

Install the wireless printing servers

Refer to your print server’s manual first. The installation process is explained in detail through the documentation. The basic steps include:

  1. Connect your printer with the printer server using the USB cable and turn on the printer.
  2. Use the RJ45 (Ethernet) cable to connect the server to your computer. This is just to initialize the installation process only as you won’t need this later after the wireless printing has been configured successfully.
  3. Install the driver from the printer server’s installation CD. During this processm you will need to set the password and the IP address so you could connect to the wireless network.
  4. Proceed to configure your print server. This is very important because incorrect settings will cause connectivity issue. Make sure your key in the correct SSID or your network’s name. If your wireless Access Point (AP) or Wireless Router (WR) has any security features enabled, encryption for instance, make sure you enable the same security feature/encryption on your print server.
  5. Once the printer drivers are installed, you may disconnect the network cable that connects your server and your computer. You may now do a test print wirelessly from your computer.
