UK Broadband Market heats up as Sky offer Free Broadband

The UK Broadband Market is really heating up as Sky offer a free broadband service to customers who take up one of their TV, Broadband and Phone bundles. Sky customers, paying as little as £18 a month for Sky TV, can add in up to 2Mb broadband for free with the Sky Broadband Base package.

This has caused other broadband providers to consider their pricing, with TalkTalk now one of the most competitive providers offering up to 8Meg Broadband Speeds for just £6.99 a month.

Elsewhere the press battle between BT and Virgin Media is really getting tasty, with Virgin Media suggesting BT are up to Broadband Trickery in their ad copy and BT responding saying BT subscribers can save up to £180 compared to Virgin Media.

All UK Providers are bound to be looking over their shoulders with the news that Google are set to enter the US Broadband Market. It’s not too difficult to assume that if the big G have success in the US they will look to roll out the same model in other markets, the next being the UK.

Whether prices will be able to stay as competitive as they currently are in the UK is a different matter all together. With the crumbling UK infrastructure causing really problems as data requested get more and more, and demand for streaming live video, TV and movies increases; investment is going to be required which won’t come cheap. It’s no surprise then, to see warnings this week in the press that Broadband costs are likely to go up considerably over the next couple of years.
