Does Mobile Phone Deals Really Benefit Us?

I had the opportunity to use quite a number of mobile phones when I was stationed in Singapore a couple of years back. Singapore is one of the countries in the world which has a very competitive mobile service market. It is so amazing that you can easily find a good offer from any of the telecommunication companies in Singapore.

The telcos keep offering mobile service related from SIM only deals to a complete package which includes a mobile phone. Telcos such as Singtel, M1 and Starhub competes positively by giving a contract based offers as well as phone only offers. I still remember a time when I received a voucher from a rival of the telco which I subscribed to, which gives me over 50% discount for any purchase of mobile phone.

As my contract about to end, my telco called me and asked if I wish to continue my contract. They also offered me some discount (but not as much as the rival). I told them that I got a better offer, but the immediately counter-offered me. As a result, I continued my subscription with the telco. That’s how serious they are doing business back in the Lion City.

Do not surprise if you see school kids with the most latest phone in the MRT (a public transport like a tube in UK) because the telcos also have special offers for students. For example, you may find the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 deals for students. Not only that, they can also benefit the Nokia C6 deals, although these phones are considered new and relatively expensive compared to other entry level phones.

It is important for you to reckon the offers before making any decision especially if you’re looking for a contract based package. This is because once you’ve signed the contract, you’ll be bound to their contract and you can’t simply terminate the subscription, unless of course you wish to pay the penalty.
