If you love to watch action packed movies, you must have seen UAV or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, a plane that looks more or less like a normal radio controlled aircraft. The UAV has been used by US Army and special forces for many years to perform reckon operations, especially at a risky zones. The images or videos taken by the UAV will be sent to the head of operation to properly plan for any necessary actions. But in future, the UAV might just be a part of military history as a few groups around the globe has been working hard to scale down its size to as small as a house flies. Sounds impossible?. Maybe not….
A couple of years back, a team at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has been working on miniature drones that hover around and transmit live video stream back to its operator. The DelFly team’s objective is to maximise aerodynamic efficiency and to develop devices that are small enough to be mount on the insect-like robots. The DelFly team’s masterpiece – DelFly II weighs only 17grams with a 28-cm wingspan and can easily sneak into a building for reconnaissance purpose.
Compared to the WASP III, currently dubbed as the smallest UAV used by US military which has a wingspan of 72.3cm, another variant of DelFly, DelFly Micro weighing just slightly over 3 grams including a camera and with a wingspan of merely 10 cm. By making the size smaller, the tasks can be easily taken care of as it can sneak into small holes or places that human can hardly access.
In future, we need to be more vigilant even with house flies as it may not a normal flies. It may a surveillance miniature drone that sent to snoop on you!.
