Hewlett Packard (HP) has recently completed its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm Inc. With effect from last Thursday, HP has a new weapon to compete in the world of digital networks. With its proven track record in personal computer (PC) manufacturing, this will be an added advantage to survive in this digital era.
The past couple of years has seen quite a number of tech companies embraced to mobile computing. Despite facing some challenges in taking over palm, a pioneer in PDA/smartphone maker which has been struggling in the recent years, HP managed to complete the deal to ensure they could compete in the market to provide wireless computing and communication solutions on the go, which is highly in demand nowadays.
With the acquisition, HP is believed to pour new resources into Palm’s smartphone business. Earlier, the company acquired Melodeo, a digital music service company which is popular with a software that capable of delivering songs to mobile phones, regardless of the operating system, as long as it is connected to the Internet. Since Apple has blocked Palm based phones from accessing the iTunes store, Melodeo’s software is believed to deliver other Internet content as well to HP’s mobile gadgets.
HP also reported that Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein will head a new business unit responsible for Palm’s phone operation as well as developing new products which includes netbook and tablets which will be using Palm’s operating system – WebOS.
